Earth Day 2013

  • Posted by Limbo on April 17, 2013 at 7:28pm

What's all happening on *Earth Day*, Monday, April 22, 2013 [22-04-2013]?

Beyond the usual Earth Day activities (Recycling, 'junk to funk'
fashion type shows, etc.), there are some interesting events that will
be lining up with each other...

+ The World Premiere of the SIRIUS disclosure film, main premiere being shown in L.A. [http://www.sirius.neverendinglight.com/]

+ Also in L.A. will be the Live Mayoral Debate. Though I cannot
comment far on this event, it seems like an interesting choice to hold
such a debate on Earth Day, when it probably could have been on any
other day in the week. [http://www.scpr.org/events/2013/04/22/live-los-angeles-mayoral-deba...]

+ A Press Conference will be held in New York City revealing the
details about astronaut selection for the exciting Mars One project. [http://mars-one.com/en/]

+ The annual Lyrid Meteor Shower (originating near Vega) will be peaking on this day.[http://www.itwire.com/science-news/space/59461-peak-of-lyrid-meteor...]

+ In Washington, DC there will be the invitation-only Aspen Institute
Symposium on issues involving institutional racism, personal
responsibility, multi-racial and post-racial attitudes.

+ The Earth Day Network will be focusing their activities around "The
Face of Climate Change", an empathetic portrayal of humanity and our
relationship to our planet from a global race perspective. [http://www.emagazine.com/earth-talk/earth-day-2013-april-22]

+ It isn't only the Earth Day Network that is taking on "The Face of
Climate Change" as their specific theme. In the Philippines, the
Department of Environment and Natural Resources is also adopting this
theme for their Earth Day activities with the additional tagline of
"Earth Day Every Day, Everywhere, for Everyone". [http://www.pia.gov.ph/news/index.php?article=911366172755]

+ Meanwhile, at Princeton, one of the co-founders of Global Zero, the
international movement for elimination of nuclear weapons, will deliver
a public lecture titled "Global Zero's Fight for Hearts and Minds: Is
Nuclear Disarmament Possible in Your Lifetime?" [http://wws.princeton.edu/event_rep/BruceBlair04_22/]

+ In Milwaukee, there will be another lecture given by the Wisconsin
IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center to discuss exploration of the
universe from the South Pole, as well of studying the universe in a new
way.

+ At the same school in Milwaukee, there will be a physics professor
presenting a colloquium about HAWC, which is a gamma ray observatory
searching for the sources of the highest energy cosmic rays in the
Universe. [http://www.news.wisc.edu/21680]

+ At the University of Rochester, the songwriter and drummer for the
Doors and the former lead singer and guitarist for Barenaked Ladies will
be speaking with the director for the University's Institute for
Popular Music in a public conversation. [http://www.rochester.edu/news/show.php?id=5982]

+ In Ohio, an archaeologist duo will discuss comparative analysis
about the Newark Earthworks (2,000 year olds, they are the largest
geometric earthworks complex in the world) that they worked on for the
World Heritage nomination. [http://indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com/2013/04/16/newark-earthwo...]

+ At the Louvre Abu Dhabi, a new exhibit will open entitled Birth of a
Museum in which 130 artworks, some never seen before, will be shown to
acknowledge the museum's historical and geographical position as well
that "we hope this growing universal collection continues bridging
civilizations, celebrating diversity and connecting cultures". [http://www.arabnews.com/news/448447]

+ The World's largest newspaper, Metro, will feature Will and Jaden
Smith both in-paper and online for an advance of their June film, "After
Earth" in which Jaden and Will will imagine what the Earth will look
like hundreds of years from now. [http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20130415005972/en/Smith-Jaden...]

+ In Dubai, UAE, IT security will be discussed at Security Strategist
event to discuss hacking and the IT industry from a business
perspective. [http://www.cnmeonline.com/news/security-strategist-2013-speakers-an...]
Interesting enough, in New York, originally there was meant to be a
Hackathon focusing on environmental-related projects, but it got
reschedule to this weekend instead.

+ At Niagara Falls, New York, the former Somali prime minister will
speak of his time as the leader of an impoverished, war-torn East
African nation that dealt with famine and militant extremist groups. [http://www.wnypapers.com/news/article/current/2013/04/13/110519/dr....]

+ Many business will also be releasing their first quarter results,
including IntriCon, Healthstream, and more after the market closes on
the day.

+ And finally, Disney will be celebrating the Animal Kingdom exhibit's 15th Anniversary. [http://attractionsmagazine.com/blog/2013/04/14/disneys-animal-kingd...]
