5/14/2013 — Strange small Earthquakes in the Southwest USA — Plumes and Sinkholes — Craton in flux
Posted on May 14, 2013 by sincedutch
Yesterday, May 13, 2013 — we saw a plume appear on RADAR at about 500 UTC out of the Western tip of Texas.
(plume NW of Marfa, Texas) – link to backdated NEXRAD RADAR here:
http://vortex.plymouth.edu/gen_nids.cgi?ident=EPZ&pl=n0r&yy=2013&mm=05&dd=14&hh=07&nn=00&size=912×684&loop=yes1&zoom=¢er=
see the .gif of the event here : just NW of Marfa, TX
————————
Approximately 20-30 minutes after the plume began, an earthquake struck the same area.
The Earthquake happened very close to the plume epicenter (or conversely, the plume happened close to the earthquake epicenter just a few minutes before the EQ occurred).
Not many earthquakes in this area normally, nor do we see very many plumes on RADAR in W. Texas.
USGS earthquake statistics here:
2.7M – West tip of Texas – May 14, 2013 – 5:14UTC
earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/usc000gw1m
Event Time
Location
31.128°N 104.746°W depth=4.3km (2.7mi)
————————
Move forward to this afternoon , May 14, 2013 — an earthquake strikes
South Utah at the Arizona border. Again, not many earthquakes at this
location.
It turns out there are several sinkholes near this epicenter — marked
by the google earth community, and even having state park designations
: looks like a parking lot is built next to one of these sinkholes,
meaning its a place people can go hike/explore.

Overall, I would indeed call these “odd” earthquakes. That being
said, a plume preceding an earthquake, its not unheard of, especially
since things are picking up again to the west.
Earthquakes near the Grand Canyon , at a known sinkhole prone area , are a sign of movement along the edge of the craton.
After last weeks dormant volcanic movement , at Yellowstone / Lava
Hot springs, Idaho …. plus the fracking earthquakes in Oklahoma /
Colorado / Arkansas…. plus the movement at Bayou Corne to the south…..
IT SHOULD BE OBVIOUS that the craton is being slightly displaced by the
Pacific unrest.
