Large Sinkhole In Winnipeg’s North End
May 14, 2013
CANADA - Winnipeg police have blocked a large sinkhole at an
intersection in the city’s north end Sunday. Officers were called to
Airlies Street and Ashbury Bay at about 1 p.m. City crews are currently
on scene assessing the crater. The city said the sinkhole will be
repaired Monday. Homes in the area will not have water Monday, so crews
can test for a possible leak. Sinkholes are depressions and holes that
occur in the surface of land. Most are caused by fluctuating water
levels underground, but they can also be caused by things such as the
collapse of an underground cave or an abandoned mineshaft. Other things
that can trigger a sinkhole is human activity. When groundwater is
pumped out for irrigation, the overall groundwater level can drop, which
can start the creation of a sinkhole. CBS NEWS
Water Pouring Into Giant Louisiana Sinkhole After 4 Breeches In Containment Berm
May 14, 2013
According to Sonny Cranch with Texas Brine, heavy rain is to blame for
the four breeches that opened in the containment berm before dawn
Friday. Cranch says two of the four breeches have been repaired. About
three weeks ago, officials decided to extend the berm wall because the
primary berm wall was not holding its proper height and subsidence
problems. They were 90 percent complete on the extension when the
breeches happened. “We made the decision to extend the western leg
beyond that particular point to a point further west to assure that we
would be in an area where there wouldn’t be subsiding,” said Texas Brine
spokesperson Sonny Cranch. Cranch says that slow sinking and Friday’s
rains caused the four breaches in the berm. He says the weather kept
crews from repairing it. MORE
