President Barack Obama will travel to Illinois to deliver what the White House is billing as a major speech on the economy on July 24.
The speech Wednesday marks a return for Obama to Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, where he gave a June 4, 2005 address as a U.S. Senator that stressed the importance of education and equal opportunity to a thriving economy.
Dan Pfeiffer, senior adviser to the president, said in an e-mail to supporters that Obama plans to strike the same themes in a series of speeches on the economy, while also focusing on health care, education, retirement and jobs.
“The president thinks Washington has largely taken its eye off the ball on the most important issue facing the country,” Pfeiffer said in the e-mail. “Instead of talking about how to help the middle class, too many in Congress are trying to score political points, refight old battles and trump up phony scandals.”
Obama also plans to make his argument for increased infrastructure spending and universal pre-kindergarten programs in stops including Warrensburg, Mo., White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters last week. With the House of Representatives considering immigration legislation, the president may also stress the benefits of changing immigration laws.
