’And the Elohim blessed them, and the Elohim said unto them, ‘Be ye fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it.’
Genesis 1: 28
I recently went to see the movie Noah recently starring Russell Crowe and directed by Darren Aronofsky, who has also given us movies such as Requiem for a Dream (2000), Pi (1998) The Fountain (2006) and the Black Swan (2010). It was an epic piece of cinema and very much in keeping with Aronofsky’s style and impact. And since it’s almost Easter on planet Earth I thought a biblical movie review of ‘ark-like’ proportions would go down well, like a bunny’s basket of ‘chocolate eggs’ at the end of Lent. I love religious ‘scripts’, and Noah doesn’t disappoint in terms of narratives gleaned from several sources.
Apparently though Noah seems to have disappointed some Christian groups for not staying with the ‘original script’, but since there is nothing ‘original’ about much of the Old Testament ‘scripts’, then I won’t necessarily be ‘focusing’ too much on that ‘argument’ in this review. Instead I will be looking at the themes and characters and of course embellishing the original tale. I am not religious, as most of you know, and have no problem with other people believing any of the stories in the ‘big book’, but, Noah is a ‘Lord of the Rings’ style movie and the contradictions found in books from Genesis to Malachi are often of ‘movie proportions’ in my view. Not least the notion of Adam and Eve being free from original ‘Sin’ (a moon god) while dwelling in the ‘perfect garden’ – until they go for that I pad, sorry apple. Adam and Eve are symbols of our human mitochondrial DNA (which is maternally inherited) and Y chromosome DNA (paternally inherited) through the X and Y – the ‘X’ symbolism being a ‘hot topic’ to pursue in another review.
A garden ‘so perfect’ that a ‘deceiving talking serpent’, along with a simple apple could instigate the ‘fall’ and later rout of mankind? Not forgetting a God that supposedly ‘loves’ us, but also ‘loves’ to wipe out all that ‘he’ loves, is another example of some of the absurdities put forward by religions.
In this movie version of the ‘original script’ we have a passionately ‘driven’ ‘son of the father’ (Noah) whose only purpose becomes the will of a ‘maniac’ God, who has decided that total human genocide is the only way to deal with the ‘debauchery and filth’ that has become the human species, since the time of Adam. In fact as the movie progresses Noah’s character changes (along with his appearance) as he becomes more and more ‘obsessed’ with fulfilling God’s genocidal mission.
There’s nothing new in relation to the God of the Old Testament ‘loving a bit of death’ and as many writers have pointed out in books, this ‘God’ is no other than the Demiurge and ‘architect’ of the Earth (reality/world). Another name for God is the Ancient of Days first seen in the Book of Daniel and in the original Aramaic as Atik Yomin, or in the Greek in the Septuagin.
William Blake’s Ancient of Days (above left) is the perfect symbolic image of the Demiurge with ‘his’ ‘compass’ measuring space and time. As I have shown in other articles, this ‘figure is also Cronos or Saturn. The ‘All-Seeing-Eye’ and the compass used in Freemasonry is another symbol associated with the Saturn – Cronos – Ancient of Days. The eye is of the ‘watchers’, which I’ll come to.
In symbolic terms the ‘stories’ of ‘killing’ and ‘destruction’ prior to Noah’s Ark and the deluge itself, are the work of the ‘living distortion’ known as the Demiurge. The Gnostics called this God Ahriman, El, Saklas, Samael, Satan or Yahweh – the ‘creator’ of the ‘lower world’, associated with matter, flesh, time and more particularly, an imperfect, ephemeral world. Simply put in movie speak, he is the Architect in The Matrix Movies.
Seth and the bloodline of Noah, relates to Seth/Set of ancient Egypt and can be found in the stories that also talk of slaying his brother Osiris.
Noah’s Supposed Lineage
The movie starts with a young boy, Noah witnessing his father’s (Lamech) death, at the hands of the then young king Tubal-Cain, a descendant of Cain who murdered his brother Able.
Sacrifice, martyrdom and the blood letting of the new covenant was born out of this story and it is the constant theme or ‘mark’ of a maniac (often Arrogant) God and ‘his offspring’ (the elite priesthoods) found in religious writings.
