English Rocker Treats Cancer-Stricken Son with Marijuana

Paul Ryder is best known as the bassist in the alternative rock band Happy Mondays. But the British rock star was in the news recently for another reason.
In 2012, Ryder’s 11-year-old son, Chico, was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a form of cancer affecting connective tissues.
According to the Daily Mail, LA-based (where the family lives now) doctors recommended the Ryders use synthetic forms of cannabis to help aid the suffering caused by chemotherapy treatments. Ryder and Chico’s mother have taken the recommendation and run with it. Not only do they use the synthetic cannabis, but they have also given Chico cannabis oil during his treatment.
Ryder has faced drug addiction issues before in his life. He is quoted in the story as saying he would never condone Chico’s drug use, given his own history with substances. “It was surreal,” Ryder says of cannabis oil. “it worked brilliantly, and gave [Chico] instant relief.”
In December 2013, the family received news Chico was in remission. The story is an anecdotal example of marijuana and its derivatives helping to improve the quality of life for the chronically and severely ill.
While there still isn’t enough evidence to suggest marijuana can help cure cancer, multiple studies have shown cannabis is a huge aid to chemo treatment, as it aids appetite. Preliminary studies also show that the cancer-fighting properties may exist in THC and other chemicals marijuana produces.
