The Netherlands Ban Monsanto's RoundUp!

May 16th, 2015
Individuals, countries, and companies are introducing bans against Monsanto and its toxic herbicide, RoundUp, at an astonishing rate! Not too long ago we shared news of a German company booting Monsanto’s toxic ingredient glyphosate from its store shelves, and news has resurfaced of the Netherlands banning glyphosate-containing RoundUp as well!
According to CSGlobe, the Dutch Parliament decided that the sale of glyphosate-based herbicides to private parties will be prohibited as of late 2015. That means that anyone who presently sprays RoundUp on their gardens and lawns will have to find another form of pest control, as glyphosate is the main ingredient in RoundUp.
If you’re not yet aware, this chemical has been directly linked to an assortment of severe health concerns, including birth defects, nervous system damage, kidney failure, and various forms of cancer. While there has not been any conclusive evidence it causes these in humans, convincing animal studies have caused the WHO organization to recently label glyphosate as “probably carcinogen” - leading to bans like the one passed in the Netherlands.

Joining Russia, Mexico, and a list of other countries seeking to do away with the ‘likely’ cancer-causing concotion, the Netherlands has allayed many fears of concerned citizens by passing this initiative.
Bollenboos and the Party for Animals were the groups to launch an initiative to create a notification center, where citizens had the opportunity to express issues that concerned them. Many residents of the Netherlands shared their concerns about the use of glyphosate, and the astonishing number of people who opposed it prompted Esther Ouwehand and Gerard Schouw, two members of the Dutch Parliament, to submit a motion that would ban glyphosate from the country. Ultimately, with the support of several political parties, the motion was approved
While the Dutch Lower House had sought to ban glyphosate from non-agricultural use several years ago, Monsanto’s influence overrode that motion at the time. But *fingers crossed* many are sure the decision made last September will be a permanent one.
As was predicted last year, this move would inspire other countries to follow suit - and they have!
While progress is slow in the United States, at least GMO labeling efforts are being made and consumer awareness is growing on the daily. But Brazil, Austria, Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Japan, Luxembourg, Madeira, New Zealand, Peru, South Australia, Russia, France, and Switzerland have all at present banned glyphosate - so it’s only a matter of time before change is introduced elsewhere!

Thousands Of Indian Farmers Rise Up Against Monsanto!

May 16th, 2015
Recently in the news, farmers in Delhi, India rallied and occupied the streets in a Kisan Maha Panchayat (farmer meeting) to protest the Modi government’s anti-farmer policies.
Upset at a variety of issues needing to be addressed, citizens from ‘far and wide’ gathered to get their voice heard with the government and assert their rights.
Shri Rakesh Tikait, National Spokesperson for the Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) shared:

“The government is exhibiting its pro-industry stance by pushing for unneeded, unwanted and unsafe GMOs in our farming. We want all open air field trials of GM crops stopped immediately in the country since such open air trials pose not only a risk of contamination but also risk of trade rejection. Further, any moves towards trade liberalization in agriculture whether through the WTO route or through free trade agreements are unacceptable to us.”
Interestingly, it was reported that hundreds of women made up a large portion of the gathering demonstrators.

The protestors resolved to stay put on Parliament Street in India’s capital until the government engaged them in a dialogue and agreed to help resolve various pressing concerns, some of which include:

  • GMOs
  • Lack of fair and remunerative prices for farm produce
  • Demand for a farm income commission
  • Removing agriculture from free trade agreements including WTO
  • Adequate disaster relief for farmers
  • And more important topics that affect farmers in a country known for high suicide rates and massive GM crop failures.

Joining the ranks of millions of others around the globe, they are just one demographic of many don’t want GM crops in their country. Is Monsanto getting the message yet?
From all the news pouring through alternative media sites, it appears so. Monsanto may resist Vermont's efforts to label GMOs - and many other states' intentions to follow suit, but with a large enough portion of activists raising their voice, it is inevitable ‘the people’ will win. Even stooping so low as to win over children won’t end this crusade - GMOs and their potential risks deserve to be known.

Monsanto Falling - Organic Food Sales Reached Over $35 Billion Last Year!

May 15th, 2015
According to a survey on the organic industry from the OTA (Organic Trade Association), American consumers are showing Monsanto exactly what they think of their GMO foods and byproducts. Over the past five years, sales of organic products in the U.S. have had the fastest growth rate ever, and have jumped 11.5% in the last year alone. That takes the number from $31.5 billion to $35.1 billion, with $32.3 billion of that amount accounting for just organic food. The remaining $2.8 billion went towards non-food organic products, like pet food, household cleaners, plants and flowers etc.

Executive director and CEO of the Organic Trade Association, Laura Batcha, addressed the topic in a statement saying,

“The U.S. organic market is experiencing strong expansion, with organic food and farming continuing to gain in popularity. Consumers are making the correlation between what we eat and our health, and that knowledge is spurring heightened consumer interest in organic products. The entire organic industry needs to rally around helping consumers better understand and appreciate all the values that certified organic brings to the table. Consumer education is critical to grow the organic industry."

Very true. With misleading labels that say "all natural ingredients" or "made with real ___", education and awareness of the foods we are buying is paramount. And we are heading in the right direction. Coca-Cola is losing money and having to reduce their annual budget by $3 billion dollars thanks to a 14% decline in their 3rd quarter earnings. McDonalds is closing 700 of their stores  due to an 11% decrease in revenue and a 30% drop in profits.

While these types of companies are attempting to profit from the sale of toxic substances, and failing, other companies are quite pleased to welcome the shift towards healthy, organic, non-GMO foods and products. Chipotle recently announced  that they are now operating their franchise as 100% GMO free, and businesses like Whole Foods are pulling in record earnings with their revenue.

Where our food comes from, how it is produced, and the processes involved in getting it to our table are all important. Ask questions and support organic trade.
