Is this the rowdiest Melbourne Cup day ever? Nine arrested, 78 kicked out and five taken to hospital... as punters wake up to one massive hangover

  • Chaos and carnage reigned as almost 100,000 packed the stands at Flemington for the Melbourne Cup

  • Extraordinary pictures have laid bare the scale of debauchery at Australia's biggest race event

  • Nine people were arrested and a whopping 78 people evicted from the stands for troublemaking

  • Skylarking punters mucked around with wheelie bins and posed in eye-catching little dresses

  • Alamandin claimed honours with a brilliant victory in and Heartbreak City was beaten into second by a nose

Punters rode wheelie bins as if they were racehorses, vomited loudly into gift bags and tumbled across the grounds with bottles of drink in hand.
[size=13]There is little doubt this year's Melbourne Cup one of the rowdiest race days in recent history with extraordinary photographs from Flemington laying bare the scale of debauchery.

Chaos and carnage reigned as almost 100,000 people packed the stands to make merry (and watch the horses) at Australia's biggest racing event on Tuesday.
Police arrested nine - seven for being too drunk - and a whopping 78 troublemakers were evicted from the racegrounds throughout the day.
Victorian paramedics were also kept busy treating 31 people and taking another five to hospital 'for medical reasons'.

The party was far from over when Almandin crossed the finish line, with struggling punters lolling around amongst the tonnes of garbage left behind and playing karaoke with empty chip containers.

Compared to last year's six arrests and five evictions, Victorian police arguably suffered through one of their biggest race days in years.
Victorian paramedics were also kept busy treating 31 people at the race grounds and taking another five to hospital 'for medical reasons'.

Last year's crowds were praised for their good behaviour, but police said there were still a few who let down the rest.

One woman was arrested for pushing a high-ranking police officer into a bush, while three others were arrested for trespassing on the main street while protesting about animal rights.

After the 'race that stops the nation' ended, thousands of racegoers continued the year's biggest party.

And as booze continued to flow inside the Flemington race course, many threw their inhibitions as well as their shoes to the wind.

These two girls were seen laughing uncontrollably as one straddled the other while other race-goers watched on

+98

Melbourne Cup racegoers appeared to be tiring early in the day and this woman decided to take a morning nap on her friend

Punters appeared to grow more enthusiastic as the day wore on, with one young race-goer even deciding to crawl on top of a wheelie bin and ride it as if it were a horse.

The woman's jovial antics did not appear to tarnish even as juice from the bin dripped out and oozed over her friend's brown leather boot.

And as the sun lowered in the sky, punters appeared to care less about maintaining their decorum and more about simply having a good time.

One middle-aged woman appeared to grow so ill that she was forced to vomit into a wine gift bag.

Drooping her face down and into the Debortoli wine bag, three women gathered around her in a vain attempt to help.

Boys will be boys: Young men were seen 'play fighting' in their suits at Melbourne's Flemington Racecourse on Tuesday

As many racegoers made their way towards the exit, others appeared more content taking time out on the ground with friends.

One woman had no choice but to fall to the ground when a male friend lunged at her and brought them both toppling down.

The woman, clad in a blue dress and black heels, appeared to land face down on the ground as friends nearby rejoiced in the moment.

Soon after the pair took a dive to the ground, another woman appeared equally as content taking a moment to relax on the ground.

While many punters lined up for alcoholic beverages, the woman appeared to be entertained enough using a Pringles packet as a microphone.

+98

This couple decided to enjoy the sun while it was out, taking a quick nap on the grassy fields

+98

This woman used blankets to shield her from the day's events as she quietly took some time out for herself

With an array of unique outfits on display on Tuesday, one woman in particular left very little to the imagination, bursting out of a tight low-cut black dress with a full face of make-up and tattooed arms.

The revealing gown was embellished with jewels across her chest, and featured nude detail along the neckline.

And while some dresses were more revealing than others, there was no lack of bare skin from a large contingency of the racegoers.

But barely-there dresses were the least of concerns for paramedics who were tasked to oversee the Melbourne Cup after it was revealed how many were treated on the grounds for being too drunk.

Racegoers make their way through the rubbish strewn across the grass at Flemington Racecourse on Melbourne Cup day

Photos captured from Tuesday's event paint the punters as a 'friendly' bunch, as men and women both jump to the aid of their struggling friends.

One woman who is sitting on the ground is seen being lifted from the ground by a concerned man.

But as she extends a hand out, she refuses to take the bottle of alcohol out of her mouth in order to stand with more ease, simply relying on her friend to get her up.

Another woman, clad in pink and black, is seen lying back as her friend helps her put her high heels back on.

Resting on her elbows and peering over at her feet, she appears all too content to let her friend to the work for her.

One busty woman posed for photographs in a rather revealing outfit trackside

+98

Three men were seen rolling on the grass with their heads dragging along the ground and alcohol held carefully in the air

+98

After the ninth and final horse race of the day punters started to really relax and make the most of the track

The action appeared to start early as many racegoers planned for the day of debauchery ahead.

One group of young men who were seen posing for a photo in front of the iconic bronze statue of Phar Lap, predicted an eventful day ahead for themselves.

'That $600 drunk and disorderly fine come at us,' the photo was captioned.

Just moments before the horses took to their positions for the 'race that stops the nation', thousands of spectators were forced to duck for cover as steady rain rolled in.

But the rain seemed to add to the day's antics, as people ran for cover and others embraced some-what less fashionable blue ponchos to shield themselves from the downpour.

Many racegoers were also seen huddling together, refusing to move from their track-side positions.

WHO CROSSED THE FINISH LINE FIRST IN THE RACE THAT STOPS THE NATION IN 2016?

Almandin claimed the honours with a brilliant victory with the seven-year-old securing the $3.6m prize for first with a brilliant run under jockey Kerrin McEvoy.
