A shooting and ramming incident has created widespread panic in Lower Manhattan on Halloween. The chaos erupted at 3:10 p.m. local time at West Street and Chambers Street. Singer Josh Groban tweeted, “Oh my God I just heart gun shots and ran with my dog. Downtown. F***.” So far, officials have confirmed that shots have been fired but have not elaborated further. It’s thought that the injured people have injuries that are consistent with being hit by a vehicle.
Here’s what you need to know:
Pix 11’s Anthony DiLorenzo has said that their are “several people confirmed injured/unconscious.” DiLorenzo later reported that those people had been hit by a truck. New York 1 is reporting that six people have been killed and that one NYPD officer has been injured. That number was later confirmed by an NYPD official.
NBC New York’s Jonathan Dienst reports that 15 people have been injured as a result of the incident.
According to New York City Alerts, the incident is not being treated as terror related. It’s thought a fight broke out between two truck drivers resulting in shooting and people being run over. While CNN’s Jim Sciutto reports that terrorism is being considered by investigators.
ABC New York reports that the truck in question is a pickup truck. The truck being circulated in photos on social media appears to be a Home Depot rental truck.
There is one person in custody after the incident, according to the Pix11 report. Police have said that they are not seeking any other suspects at this time. The shooter is alive after being shot in the leg by responding officers.
