Meteors
Published on Nov 15, 2017

On Nov. 15, at 4:52 local time (3:53 universal time) a very bright Leonid meteor was spotted over Spain. The event was produced by a fragment from Comet Temple-Tuttle that hit the atmosphere at about 260.000 km/h. The event begun at an altitude of around 146 km over the province of Cuenca and ended at a height of about 78 km. It was recorded in the framework of the SMART Project (University of Huelva) from the astronomical observatories of La Hita (Toledo), Calar Alto (Almería), La Sagra (Granada), Huelva and Sevilla.

Bright fireball over Ohio, 43 reports received

Posted by TW on November 15, 2017 in category Meteor activity

A bright fireball was seen streaking through the sky over Ohio, United States at 01:49 UTC on November 15, 2017 (20:49 EST, November 14). This is the third of four major fireball events within 10 hours, according to the International Meteor Organization (IMO).
The American Meteor Society (AMS) and IMO received 43 witness reports by 21:40 UTC. Just one of the reports mentions concurrent sound while 14 people reported fragmentation of the fireball that lasted up to 8 seconds.

The first estimation of the 3D trajectory shows that the visible path of the fireball ended somewhere over Greenfield, OH. The object was traveling east to west and might be a part of the Taurid Meteor Shower.

This was the third of four major fireball events within 10 hours on November 14 and 15, 2017. The first event took place at 16:48 UTC on November 14 over western Germany and, with over 1 500 reports, it soon became the most reported fireball event from Europe since the AMS and the IMO launched the international version of the AMS fireball form.
The second event took place over the western France at 21:32 UTC on November 14 and the fourth over Arizona, US at 03:29 UTC on November 15.
It's also important to note that a sonic boom was reported by numerous people across North Alabama shortly after 13:40 CST (19:40 UTC) on November 14, 2017. At this time, there is still no official explanation but this was most likely another meteor.

Bright fireball over western France, 70 reports received

Posted by TW on November 15, 2017 in category Meteor activity

A bright fireball entered Earth's atmosphere over the city of Bordeaux, western France at 21:32 UTC (22:32 CET) on November 14, 2017, as the second major fireball event within 5 hours. It lasted up to 3 seconds.
The International Meteor Organization (IMO) received 70 witness reports by 19:50 UTC on November 15. Two people reported delayed sound associated with the event and 1 concurrent.
The fireball has been caught on 10 cams operated by the French camera network FRIPON, a member of the citizen science project Vigie-Ciel (Toulouse, Angers, Talence, Sabres, Carcassonne, Aurillac, Hendaye, Saint Bonnet Vert, Coulounieix-Chamiers and Mauroux).
"This event doesn’t seem like being part of the Taurid Meteor Shower," IMO said.

Very bright fireball explodes over Arizona, 4th major fireball within 10 hours

Posted by TW on November 15, 2017 in categories Editors' picks, Meteor activity

A very bright fireball streaked through the night sky over Arizona at around 03:29 UTC on November 15, 2017 (20:29 MST, November 14). The event lasted up to 7 seconds and does not appear as a good candidate for the Taurid Meteor Shower. This is the 4th major fireball event within 10 hours.
The American Meteor Society (AMS) received 108 reports by 14:50 UTC. 12 people reported a sound associated with the event, 4 heard concurrent and 8 delayed sound. 34 people reported fragmentation.
The event was seen from Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah and New Mexico.

"The first estimated 3D trajectory doesn’t make this fireball a good candidate for the Taurid Meteor Shower," AMS said. "Traveling from North-West to South-East, the visible path of the fireball ended somewhere east of Happy Jack, AZ."

This is the 4th major fireball event within 10 hours. The third event took place over Ohio, United States at 01:49 UTC on November 15. So far, the AMS received 38 reports. One of the witnesses said a concurrent sound was associated with the event while 13 saw it fragment.

"The first analysis conducted by former IMO president Dr. Juergen Rendtel of the Leibniz-Institut für Astrophysik Potsdam from the raw data shows that the events that occurred over Arizona and France cannot be linked to the Taurids: the Arizona event was moving from North-West to South-East while the French event was moving from North-East to South-West," IMO said.
"However, the events over Germany and Ohio fit the Taurids direction (East->West) and the low inclination angle at the time of the sightings! Note that the East-West direction is related to the Taurids only because the fireball occurred in the local evening. Later in the night or towards the morning the direction is different, of course."
