I just happen to have an insiders view into the world of Public Service… The Government is divided into several branches – ranging from the Executive, the Legislative, the Judicial and then there are the Private/Public aspect that has newly been introduced where private companies now offer Government Services…
The well known fact is – Our Government (Municipal, State/Provincial and Federal) is BROKE – over spending, failed long range investment, high interest rates, and special interests that have corrupted the Executive, Legislative and Judicial Branches have left the coffers EMPTY…
Massive Debts are affecting ‘OUR’ ability to borrow money for Infrastructure Costs and ‘the whole system is collapsing around us…’
There’s just not enough MONEY…
There’s lots of MONEY – there’s not enough INTELLIGENCE and ‘GOOD SENSE.’ And we can ONLY BLAME the people… We’ve failed to demand more from our Political Leaders… We’ve allowed them to systematically paralyze and surgically remove Oversight so that they can operate blindly in the Dark with our Tax Dollars…
Here goes the rant – The Daily Operations and Maintenance Operations of the Facilities where I work at was once managed and operated by Public Servants – a whole army of men and women walked the halls daily fixing the Plumbing, the Electrical, the Doors, changing broken windows, fixing the ceiling and roofs, plugging leaks; fixing phones, fax machines, printers and photocopiers... Cabinet Makers to Carpenters, Machinists to Mechanics, to Welders, Electricians, Plumbers and Electronics Technicians – Hell, they use to build High Tech Robots on site – in the 1960’s to the early 90’s… Then there was the concierge and cleaning staffs, the cafeteria staff, the mail room, shipping and receiving and the front reception…
Because of cost cutting, they privatized the Mechanical Maintenance of the complex to a private corporation with its own staff – they bid for the jobs in 2 to 4 years contracts and then the ‘job’ is renegotiated between competitive companies until another contract is awarded… The mechanics, machinists, plumbers, electricians, carpenters and robotics/electronics technicians were all surplused – their jobs are GONE.
Today, if we need anything done, a private contractor is hired, comes on site and does the job – charging 3x the cost for the job in residential terms – because ‘it’s a government contract…’
A few years ago, the last remaining Electrician retired – they surplused his job and then contracted an Electrical Company with a staff of upward of 12 men to do the job the one elderly electrician used to do… They run cables, fibreoptics, and telephone lines throughout the building, which has been cited to demolition by 2018 – because it ‘needs to be done.’ – the wiring – and the demolition…
The fact is, they have hired a Private Contractor, pay them 10 times the cost of hiring a full time electrician to lay conduit and cables for technology we can’t even support in a building that will be demolished in the next 6 to 8 years…
But we surplused the job because ‘we just couldn’t afford it…’
One portion of the massive complex has already been levelled to put in parking, another building demolished for the same reason and two other buildings are slated to be demolished in the next 6 to 15 years to build new structures – shifting the Public Focus towards new horizons… (Change is fine – the cost of operating these older buildings warrants the new developments – that’s not being argued – what is, is this notion that Public Jobs are expendable because they are too expensive – yet, we pay 10 times more to provide the same services going privately – because it isn’t about the cost of Labor – as we are constantly told – but rather, the cost of paying into Benefits Packages to long term employees who’ve offered years of expertise and guidance…)
It’s not the idea that ‘Jobs for Life’ are ‘BAD’ but rather – they are telling us LIES to support their initiatives because they (the ‘Government’ – the ‘Employers’) are changing the definition of Industry and Commerce in our Country (Canada, the USA and Europe) because they have produced too many Middle and Lower/Upper Class Citizens to compete with the wealth of the Upper Elite Classes – More money means better life styles, better education and higher awareness… Better Educated People are typically the better enabled to see injustices in the system and then find ways to offer ‘solutions.’ This irrevocably has an effect on the bottom line of the Ruling Elite Class – it takes away their Authority and places it in the hands of people who aren’t in on the ‘Game.’
It makes little sense to eliminate ONE JOB and then replace that same job in the Private Sector with 10 People and say that it’s ‘Saving us Money.’
Or maybe I’m just wrong… And should just learn to bite my tongue…
Reality is not the world which we can see and measure and understand as being ‘real’ – Reality is merely a figment of our own imagination – strings of causality that intersect with nodes (called neurons) in our brain that translates frequencies into symbols that are then rationalize by our senses… Reality is purely subjective, based on the consciousness of the Observer observing it…
In this, everything is not as it seems, nor as we expect it to be – there always a deeper truth that lies beneath the surface…
