DID YOU KNOW?

Trying to follow the GCR and all of its varied components can be maddening. My thought process tends to gravitate toward the countries involved whose currencies seem to have the highest return options, or at least the currencies we are led to believe will have the highest returns. IE: Dinar, Zim, Dong and Rupiah or Iraq, Zimbabwe, Vietnam and Indonesia. More particular is the Dinar and the Zim, with the Zim being the mac-daddy of returns. So it stands to reason one should watch the activities of these two countries to get some semblance of reality.

Zimbabwe is experiencing its worst economic crises in decades, with shortages of fuel, prolonged power cuts, other basic commodities, with spiking inflation hovering around 520% and is putting hopes on China (reputedly the end buyer of Zim) to help turn around its struggling economy after efforts failed to have US and EU economic sanctions removed last year. The local currency is the legal tender for all domestic transactions except for a few business operators particularly those in the tourism sector who can trade in US dollar.

Zimbabwe is currently desperate for foreign currency but outside (foreign) investors are hesitant because of the volatile exchange rate of the Zim and the difficulty of moving their funds (business proceeds) out of country. So during the week of Jan 16th, 2020, Zimbabwe and China had a currency swap deal aimed at strengthening trade between the two nations. This currency swap deal, will make it easier for Chinese businesses in Zimbabwe to move their funds out of the country.

The problem is that this currency swap deal may simplify an exchange control procedure and it will help the Chinese traders move their business proceeds out of the country but Zimbabweans who might have had access to that money (foreign currencies) before, will not have this any more. The potential foreign exchange inflows from investment will be cancelled as the foreign currency does not get into any of the Zimbabwe’s economic systems as it is given to a Chinese company that sends its profits back to China.

We know that China has vested interest in the African nations. On January 13 this year, 2020, Xi (President of China) claimed China has been Africa’s largest trading partner for 11 years in a row and that China has made direct and indirect investments that have reached $110 billion, with more than 3700 Chinese enterprises invested or started business in various parts of Africa. The swap arrangement will enable an investor in China to pay a Chinese business in Zimbabwe, (which is looking for foreign exchange). The Chinese-owned business in Zimbabwe would release the Zimbabwe dollar equivalent to the current US dollar exchange rate, to a local bank account of the payer in China. Other nations in Africa including South Africa, Nigeria and Ghana also have currency swap arrangements with China.

However, what is not widely known is the RBZ (Reserve bank Of Zimbabwe) raided $10 million from a trust account set up for a $110 million project designed to upgrade the Robert Mugabe airport, the largest airport in Zimbabwe. This, in turn caused China to cancel a $1.3 billion investment package with Zimbabwe siting lack of confidence in Zimbabwe’s leadership.

The currency swap deal is an important element in the overall picture of the GCR. It is these behind the scene activities we all are unaware of until they are done and made public. The government of Zimbabwe is dangling its lucrative mineral treasures trove to other nations of the world in efforts to ease their domestic challenges. They are seeking massive financial bailout packages from wealthy nations with an appetite for their abundant minerals, such as Russia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Russia is entertaining swapping fuel and other considerations for diamonds while Mnangagwa (president of Zimbabwe) has of late turned to the UAE, who is interested in snapping up Zimbabwe’s gold reserves and a significant stake in the National Oil Infrastructure Company of Zimbabwe (Noczim).

The reason for pointing this out is the same scenarios hold true for Iraq, or any other nation involved in the GCR. So, even though they may have vast mineral and negotiable natural resources they must show governmental stability and create confidence they have the ability to maintain and honor their agreements and end the corrupt behavior that plagues them (like the RBZ raiding designated trust accounts or individuals redirecting profits for personal greed).
