Pulling down the fences a community experiment

Tucked away on Digger Street in Cairns City itself is a small
community running an ecological social experiment. By pulling down the
fences of 3 neighbouring properties and combining resources, they have
not only reduced their costs but have also dramatically reduced their
carbon footprint.

In this fast paced modern day world our lives can be all-consuming.
At Digger it is teaching people how to live in a community again.
Learning to share resources and that the bedroom is the only private
space everything else is common area and must be respected as such.
The
beautiful common area is decorated with amazing unique artworks around
the centralised kitchen area, displaying creativity from the local &
abroad artists.
Everybody eats together not only as a healthy option and a money saving idea but also to bring about togetherness.
The
gardens have the lively presence of chickens and ducks that are
mostly for educational and therapeutic purposes, but does bring some
produce like eggs. They also compensate by buying in bulk from Rusty’s
markets and the real food network. By only buying in bulk they have
become shopping bag free and reduced the number of Council picks ups by
75%, an amazing ecological feet.

The creative space for Artists of any kind also has some room for a
jungle. Containing its very own yelling tree, which is appropriately a
Coco nut tree, which I personally thought was a fantastic idea for any
share housing situation.
So there we have it people, amazing ecological ideas being put to action right in Cairn’s very own back yard.

A great example for us all to follow
