Following a period of heavy rainfall, multiple sinkholes have appeared across the grounds of Nayanoripalle village in Kadapa District of Andhra Pradesh State, India. Local officials ordered local residents to evacuate the area on November 22, 2015.
Large sinkholes most likely resulted from a period of last week's heavy rainfall, according to experts from Geological Survey of India and Kadapa District Collector K.V. Ramana, who was present as the officials inspected the site.
Prior to the inspection, officials of the mining and groundwater departments conducted a survey as well, and detected deposits of limestone. Abundant amounts of precipitation have caused the limestone and soil to dissolve and sink up to 9 meters (30 feet) in depth. Multiple sinkholes which have formed since last week, some of which were up to 25 meters (82 feet) in diameter, caused widespread panic among the residents.
One sinkhole formed in front of the mandal parishad school in Nayanoripalle, causing the surface-level water tank and a few nearby trees to fall into it. Sinkhole formation was accompanied with defeaning sounds, according to media reports. As a results, numerous residents have been evacuated as officials concluded sinkhole formation poses high risk to their lives and property.
