Volcano Uptick: The Kanlaon Volcano in the Philippines is the latest volcano to erupt spewing ash and steam half a mile into the sky!
The Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Oriental province erupted at 5:13 a.m. on Friday (December 11), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said in its bulletin.
Four volcanic earthquakes were recorded in the past 24 hours, Phivolcs said, two of which were accompanied by a low-energy ash eruption which lasted for one minute based on visual observation. The eruption produced a grayish to dirty-white cloud of ash reaching a height of 600 meters which then drifted southwest.
Traces of ash were observed at San Jose, La Castellana on the southwest slope of the volcano. Phivolvcs said the volcano remains at alert level 1 - meaning "it is at an abnormal condition and is in a period of current unrest."
It reminded local government units and the public that entry into the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited due to the further possibilities of sudden and hazardous steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.
Phivolcs also reminded civil aviation authorities to advise pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano's summit as airborne ash from a sudden eruption can be hazardous to aircraft.
