On August 21, 2017, many millions of people across the Unites States will enjoy nature's grandest show, a total eclipse of the Sun.
This is a rare opportunity to view this celestial wonder as nearly everyone in the 48 contiguous states can reach totality within a day's drive.
The 2017 total eclipse will be
# the first on the 48 coterminus United States since 1979
# the first within the 50 United States since 1991
# the first to cross the United States from the Pacific to the Atlantic since 1918
The eclipse crosses the nation from Oregon to South Carolina in 94 minutes.
The maximum duration of totality is 2 minutes, 41.66 seconds at 88.99° west longitude, 37.52° north latitude in Southern Illinois.
