Beautiful Experiment Reveals How Generosity Overcomes Greed
July 16th, 2015
What would you think if you were skating down a sunny California beach and saw a board hanging up full of free money, green dollar bills just floating in the wind, ready to be taken, with a sign reading ‘give what you can, take what you need’?
A wonderful group of people called the Ark Project put together a little experiment doing just that, a with curiosity as to what the outcome would be. They scrawled their simple message, tacked about 20 one dollar bills to the board, hung it up and stood back. You may just be surprised at what they caught on film.
The busy beach strip bustled on with its usual flow ofpeople going to and from, but many people stopped to see what the money boardwas all about. It might be easy toimagine many people stopping to pocket a little spending cash, or to evenimagine a person taking it all, but quite the opposite happened.
While a few people did take from the board, many more contributed to the love fund, tacking on one or several of their own dollars to share their love with the project, some passersby even stopping to take a picture or reflect on the message.
“It makes your brain scrambleseeing all that money floating around,” said one passerby who identified thathe himself was monetarily poor, “It makes you think how many people are outhere doing the right thing.”
“If I were rich, I’d be putting $100 up there,” he added. “There’s so many hundredsof other people in more need than I am. As long as I got my mental health andmeal for tomorrow I’m not greedy. Greed destroys love. marriages, relationships, it destroys everything. Trust and friendship are worth more than gold.”
How true it is, though we so oftenforget. The project creators end theirexperiment with a heartwarming use of the money collected. Check it out:
