Simple Living: Why the Hiking Trail is a Great Place to Start Hiking1
This is a guest post by Julie McClain
The 21st century is about quarter way gone – can people still live a minimalistic life? It’s a hard question to answer if you can only think about all the tech gadgets one would be missing out on and all the other creature comforts of our time such as wifi access. However, simple living does not always mean packing a bag and moving to Lapland. The ordinary tech savvy person does not even have to be disconnected to their gadgets nor the sports buff from their beloved game to start simplifying life.
Simple living is much profound than material possession or lack of. Zeroing-in on the concept with that in mind, you realize that there is a lot to be gained when you model your life in this manner. In this piece, you will read about the concept of simple living and learn how even you can inculcate it into your life.

What’s Simple Living All About?

Trying to win converts to the camp of minimalists without breaking it down is a futile, even tedious venture. Simple living, also known as voluntary simplicity, is about needing less even in your current state, regardless of the good fortune one is blessed with. There are plenty of blogs, books, and films that attempt demystify the philosophy. The most knowledgeable people describe it as a life that is less distracted – one where every once in a while we can unplug and getaway, even if in our minds only. There is no single regimen that classifies as the blueprint of simple living. The dynamics and exigencies of our lives put much weight on the version of a simpler life we can adopt – at least at first; for instance, the “smart phone addicts” can chose to ignore their phone more often and be in the moment. It can be that simple a choice.

Simple Living is Nature’s reflection

Nature is as simple as it gets on the planet earth. Nature is economical and will always follow the path of least resistance. This is why we are inspired by nature, and to be in nature, in simplifying our life. There is a calmness and inner peace that you can only learn when you are in the great outdoors.
Connecting with the environment comes easy for us because, while Buddhist monks and yogis would go into long sessions of meditation to connect to their surroundings, we can simply choose something fun like hiking. A hike to a new place is a great way to start on your path to a simpler, stress-free life. Yes, just ditch that mobile phone and put on those hiking boots.  Hikes are immersive and energy intensive expeditions that refresh your mind and help you release toxins.

Hiking Is A Healer

Walking on the tough terrain of a hike has cardiovascular benefits that are backed by solid research. Such strenuous activity puts your blood supply to the task as your muscles demand for more oxygen to keep you going. Researches also carried out a study to investigate the effects of hiking on oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is believed to be a factor in the onset, advancement and recurring of various cancers. Without having to delve into the tiresome details of the research, you need to know that the researchers found that long hikes perk up your body’s anti-oxidative capabilities.
Aside from the physical aspect there is also the psychological aspect. Hikes are refreshing and therapists would  agree that it makes you happier in general. Nature is always welcoming; a breezy and whistling tree is enough to release all the pent-up stress that you have kept bottled in all through the week. You see, the environment always gives us more than we are asking for. Here is a simple instance that happens way to often:  you were contented with just sitting on a view, soaking in the sun yet nature surprises you with a bird or animal you were not expecting to come across and just like that your day brightens up.

Final Thoughts

Having touched upon the topic of simple living in a nutshell, it is safe to assume that you have understood that a simple life shouldn’t make you give up all you know, have or are in some way connected to. Small steps like getting out more and ignoring the demanding life of the smart phone age for a little will work just fine. Media may paint a simple life as that of someone with a fridge full of organic food (or one with no fridge at all in the first place!). Quite differently, it is about us searching ourselves and finding simple things we can let go off in our lives and modeling our life differently. As you continue to embrace a life of simplicity, you will also realize that it is easier to let go of the things you thought your life would come to a halt without. Have fun trying out your version of simple living.
