Do you ever feel stuck in a rut sometimes? Or perhaps this article title caught your attention because you are currently passing through a stagnant moment where ideas and opportunities are not flowing in and things are not syncing up. This is quite normal and we all feel disenchanted by certain aspects of our lives from time to time. Yet it is imperative that you keep looking ahead and moving forward. Stagnation is, after all, not making the choice to pick yourself up and kickstart some change.
Here are a few super simple, yet effective, ideas and tips to keep yourself going when you’re at a standstill:

#1 Note what you’re doing – or not doing

Journaling is one of the best ways to reflect on your life, and it might give you some insight into your situation. Think about your job, your relationship, your family, and your hobbies. Maybe you’re not spending enough time doing the things that are important to you, or perhaps you’re fighting with your significant other far too often. Once you know what’s getting you down, you can start to work on fixing it.

#2 Know that you can change your environment

No matter your situation, it’s very likely that you can drastically change your environment should you need to. Even moving into a brighter apartment, redecorating your most-used room, or starting a vegetable garden can be enough to bring about change in your life.
If it’s a possibility, try to remain open to the idea of relocating: sometimes a city, or even a country, just isn’t the right fit, and you’d feel more fulfilled somewhere else. Maybe you find that the sea always calms you down, but you live in a landlocked city, or maybe you love meeting new people and find it difficult to do in your small town. Even just knowing that relocating is a possibility can help you to remember that you’re not stuck and that you always have options.

#3 Exercise and meditate

Exercise is one of the best ways to get yourself into a better mood. Great for your body, mind, and soul, exercise can also help you to calm down and think clearly. Many a person has had a revelation while running or cycling!
You might also like to try meditation, which can be combined with exercise or practised on its own. To start, you could try mindfulness while you walk or deep breathing exercises before you go to bed. Meditation will likely help you to put things into perspective and will give you an insight into what you’re unhappy about.

#4 Take time off

If you don’t feel like making a huge life change is the right move for you, you can still give yourself a change of scenery. If you’re able to, take a week off work and travel somewhere different. Look for the most exciting local sightseeing attractions and discover a new favourite activity – it doesn’t have to involve cocktails on the beach, although that can certainly help! What works as a relaxing holiday will vary between people, but you might like to try a multi-day hike if you’re adventurous or a city break if you find bright lights and meeting new people to be your sort of therapy.

#5 Make time to see your friends

Often people who are starting to feel a little burned-out haven’t had the chance to relax with their friends for a while. Take a night off once in a while to have a meal, or to do something fun – why not try a board game night or play a sport together? If you’re having trouble with your relationships, try to focus on quality over quantity. It’s great to have a group of friends to spend time with, but it’s essential to have a select few that you can trust and confide in.
Kick-starting your life when you feel a little stuck will require effort, but you don’t need to be scared – getting out of your comfort zone will lead to new perspectives and positive change.

Making the big switch from corporate to freelance writing involved much courage and a giant leap of faith for Allison. Though it hasn’t been a challenge-free road, becoming a freelancer is still one of the best decisions she’s ever made. Say hello to Allison on Tumblr!
