Most people don’t know that once they’re outside their country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (the band of ocean extending up to 200 nautical miles from a country’s coastline) that there are very few laws that protect them. Between #fishing and #shipping (90% of the things you buy will have traveled on a #ship at some stage), there are millions of people living in a sort of oceanic “Wild West,” largely ignored by us landlubbers who depend on their services, and their existence is often as perilous as it sounds. Ian Urbina has spent the last five years reporting on the high seas, and the result is his latest book, The Outlaw Ocean (www.theoutlawocean.com), which covers “the vast, lawless and rampantly criminal world that few have ever seen.” In this short interview, we focused on one of the areas covered by his book, forced labor in the fishing industry. Thanks to Ian for taking the time to tell the stories of these workers and to talk us today. #oceanx
