Don’t let the headlines fool you. Human beings, by our very nature, are generally kind and thoughtful. There’s a natural urge we all have to help either people or animals in distress. Don’t believe me? Well, I think these instances caught on camera of people coming to help those in need with little regard for their own safety and well-being will change your mind. Let’s begin. The last place you want to get stuck is on an active railroad crossing. But if you do, you better hope there’s someone nearby, like the person in this clip, that can quickly come to your aid and avoid disaster. The last thing these fishermen were expecting to catch off the coast of Monterey California were a pair of 16 year old girls that had been swept out to sea by a riptide and were in danger of drowning. Lucky for the girls these fishermen happened by and were able to pull them to safety aboard the boat. Otherwise, this story could have had a much darker ending. The girls were fine after their ordeal, (or at least as fine as one can be after nearly drowning) required no medical treatment, and made it home safely to their families. In a testament to the skill and precision of this excavator operator’s abilities, he gingerly scoops up a tiny puppy that had fallen down into a drainage canal ever so gently with the scoop and plops it down safely on the bank above. The little guy’s a bit muddy, but the wagging tail makes me think he’ll be just fine. Australia is a mecca for sea turtles. Of the seven species of marine turtles in the world, six are found in Australian waters. Here we see one of those sea turtles that has managed to get tangled up in an inconsiderate fisherman’s leftover equipment that should have been removed from the water. No worries little fella. Lucky for you your saviors have arrived in the form of these compassionate dudes out for a day on the boat who don’t hesitate to do the right thing. Our next clip takes us to the Philippines where we see the true spirit of community in action. When an elderly man wanted to be closer to his family, the entire village got together to not just move him into a closer place, but move his entire house to be closer to his family. That’s taking the concept of respecting your elders to a new level. If it wasn’t for the proliferation of cameras these days, we would miss out on simple acts of kindness like this where a sweet little puppy helps its elderly owner by pushing a stool a little closer so she can have a seat and rest. These folks passing by in their truck happened to notice that this lady’s porch had caught fire. Left unattended, the fire could consume the entire house. Not today, as the good samaritans sprang into action, alerted the homeowner, and immediately grabbed her hose and extinguished not only the fire, but a potential disaster. In this next one, from Syria, we meet a young girl who’s having a tough time coming to terms with having her hair shaved off due to a skin disease, and the barber who’s not going to let her suffer on his watch. This just shows the lengths some people will go to in order to change the course of someone’s life for the better. I just hope that sweet mustache made it through unscathed. Leading by example is how a true leader makes a difference to the people around them. This school principal is an excellent example of that ethos. When one of his students was being bullied for shaving his head to support his Grandfather battling cancer, he assembled the students to not only explain why that was wrong, but also show solidarity with his student by shaving his head as well. That day the students in that school learned a valuable lesson about what it means to stand together and support your fellow classmates. Not all heroes wear capes. It only takes a minute to spread a little love and help someone in need. Like this lady who selflessly popped out of her vehicle to help a blind woman navigate her way through some rough Southern California traffic. This FedEx driver jumped into action when he noticed an elderly woman trying to shovel snow from her driveway. The deliveries can wait a few minutes because lending a helping hand to our neighbors is a great way to spread community spirit. But my favorite part of this clip is how the woman, although not as spry as she once was, still wanted to do her part and shovel as best she could.
