That’s what they do in Switzerland for the main part. Everyone is a citizen-soldier and everyone votes on how much to spend on roads, etc., and on who gets the contract. It works fine.

Let us simply cancel Washington, D.C.
We can certainly do better and not worse by redesigning our system of administration.
Since the man focus of forming a government was to provide for a common defense, we can each contract with what ever military service contractors are available directly. We need no middle man to muddy the details.
We can pick and chose from what ever sources we chose to contract.
Army Corporations
Navy Corp
Marine Corp
On this basis no need to even have a local police force, or even a county sheriff.
Thinking a bit farther we don’t even need a city or county administration. And the state activities can be directed by the people themselves with no representatives.
