Earthquake rattles New York: Magnitude 2.2 tremor ‘shakes houses’ in the early hours in parts of the state

New York has been rocked by a rare earthquake this morning, with residents reporting shaking houses in parts of the state.
Seismologists said the magnitude 2.2 was reported in the early hours on Friday morning, with the sound of a ‘loud rumble’ also heard.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake struck around a mile south-south-west of Hastings-on-Hudson.
Locals across the region took to social media to say they had felt the quake, with people reporting a tremor in the Bronx to the south and in New Jersey across the Hudson River.
Natalie Pasquarella, a reporter for WNBC News, asked her followers on Twitter: ‘Just woke up to a huge rumble…our house shook in Bergen County, anyone else?’
In a follow-up, she wrote: Not sure what that was! Never felt an earthquake before but – whew that was odd! Our house in NJ shook and heard a loud rumble.
‘Kids slept right through it…’ she added.
Other users also asked whether people in the area had felt the quake.
‘Uhhh was there just an earthquake in New York because [what] was that?’ one asked. Another asked: ‘I think I might’ve just had an earthquake. Does anyone in the New York New Jersey area feel/hear that?’
One person said ‘something shook the floor for like two seconds.’
Other New York residents said they heard a rumble and questioned whether it could have been an explosion.
‘Earthquake in New York? Police say they’ve received multiple calls like mine reporting what felt and sounded like a huge explosion,’ one user wrote.
As of 3 a.m. local time, there had been no reports of damage or injury, and the speculation of an explosion appeared unfounded.
News of the quake comes just months after upstate New York was hit by a 3.8 magnitude earthquake in February, rocking Buffalo.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located 1.3 miles from West Seneca, with shockwaves reaching Lackawanna, Buffalo, Niagara Falls, and Tonawanda.
Again, there were no reports of significant damage of injuries.
