A Crack has Opened in Earth's Magnetic Field - G2 Geomagnetic Storm is Underway - Solar Storm Alert

A co-rotating interaction region (CIR) hit Earth on, June 15th, opening a crack in our planet's magnetic field and sparking a G2-class geomagnetic storm. Solar Wind Speed is currently above 700 km/s. G1-G2 (Minor-Moderate) storm levels are expected to continue through the 16th of June due to persistent CIR and Coronal Hole High Speed Stream (CH HSS) effects. Auroras may be visible as low as New York and Idaho (typically 55° geomagnetic lat.). Storming conditions should taper off late on June 16th giving way to unsettled-active levels. CIRs are transition zones between slow- and fast-moving streams of solar wind. Solar wind plasma piles up in these regions, creating density gradients and shock waves that can rock Earth’s magnetic field much like a coronal mass ejection (CME). Thanks for watching!
