We will be having a New Moon in Cancer on the night of Wednesday, July 15th in the Americas and on Thursday, July 16th everywhere else (1:24am Universal Time on July 16th). New Moons are the beginning of the 29.5 day moon cycle and signal a fresh start for the following month. This is when there is no light on the Moon, but the beginning of when the light slowly starts to increase again, becoming visible over the following days. This is known as the beginning of the waxing phase, which lasts until the Full Moon and is associated with growth, expansion, and unfoldment.
New Moons are a great time to plant seeds, set intentions, or perform actions in relation to what you would like to grow or manifest over the upcoming cycle. It is best to do this as close to the minute of the New Moon as possible, but it can also be done over the following 24 hours. As the moon’s light grows and expands, your intentions and actions could continue to develop further. How everything unfolds for each person also depends on how one is being individually influenced by the astrology.
Cancer: Highly Emotional, Sensitive, and Protective

If you lack the positive traits of Cancer (no matter what sign you are), then this an opportunity for a new beginning of embodying more of the positive aspects of Cancer.
New Moon In Aspect To Saturn In Scorpio
This New Moon is forming a “Water Grand Trine” with Saturn and Chiron, which are both retrograde. This can help to bring up issues which may ultimately facilitate emotional healing over the next few months. Saturn’s retrograde motion in Scorpio will be ending on August 2nd, another reason why its energy is an important part of this Moon cycle.
Saturn is finishing up what it started in late 2012, but it is now enforcing some of the final touches in its attempt to help us move forward. Scorpio is associated with the underworld, our darkness, our secrets, the way we share resources, and our sexuality. Saturn is bringing up some issues around these things for a final time, and you can expect this energy to be more intense than it has been previously.
Venus Is Preparing To Go Retrograde While Squaring Saturn
To add fuel to the fire, Venus is also about to go retrograde on July 25th, making a square to Saturn. Expect drama and intense conflicts amongst lovers, which can play out in different ways depending on how the planets are affecting each person and the couple as a whole. Venus is already in its “shadow period,” and although its retrograde has not officially started yet, it is now building up the process that will play out until mid-September. Breakups are a possibility for many couples, some may be temporary while others may be permanent.
Uranus in Aries making a challenging angle to this New Moon can manifest into rebellious actions, and in some cases can even be explosive. It is about being free from any limiting constructs, and in this case it can be emotional dependencies which are inhibiting us in certain ways.
Mercury Conjunct Mars While Opposing Pluto
Mars and Mercury are also conjunct in Cancer, bringing up a theme of acting on what we have been thinking about in a way that serves our emotional needs and security. Pluto retrograde in Capricorn is also in opposition to Mercury and Mars. This could suggest that our actions towards emotional fulfillment can be related to opposing anything that it is oppressive, manipulative, secretive, or controlling. This reinforces the way both Uranus and Saturn are influencing this period, which I mentioned above.
Making Intentions For This New Moon
What is it that you are seeking to help you achieve a more emotionally fulfilling life? How are your emotional wounds, patterns, and blockages getting in the way? What actions can you take in order to move beyond or heal a situation that is oppressive to you? In what ways is your love life limiting you and what is it that you really want? How has your own darkness inhibited you from expressing your light and what actions can you take in order to address this?
These are some examples of potential intentions that are in alignment for this New Moon, however you can also set other intentions that are important to you.
Remember that it is best to set your intentions within the first 24 hours after the New Moon, which will be on the night of July 15th in the Americas and on July 16th everywhere East of there (click here to find out the exact time in your time zone). You can declare them by speaking out loud, but even better is to either write them down in words or illustrate images which reflect what it is you intend. You can also do a combination of these techniques, or employ any other means which make sense to you. As the lunar month unfolds, allow the required process to take place to help you with these intentions, and ultimately, whatever is in the best interests of your personal development.
