Very deep M6.4 earthquake hits northeast China

A very deep and strong earthquake registered by China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) as M6.4 hit Mudanjiang city of northeast China's Heilongjiang province at 04:22 UTC on January 2, 2015. CENC is reporting a depth of 580 km (360 miles). USGS is reporting M5.7 at a depth of 583 km (362 miles).
According to the USGS, the epicenter was located 23 km (14 miles) ENE of Chaihe, 42 km (26 miles) NE of Mudanjiang, 45 km (28 miles) W of Bamiantong and 53 km (33 miles) NE of Hailin, China.
Over 3 million people are living within 100 km (62 miles) radius.
USGS issued a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are highly vulnerable to earthquake shaking, though some resistant structures exist.
